Matan’s love for photography came at a very early age: his first word was “light.”
He is now a cinematographer and graduate of the Tel Aviv University Film School.
His films have been recognized by leading festivals like Cannes and Tribeca, and distributed on international platforms.
Matan shoots narrative films, commercials, promos and music videos.
His career began in 2005 during his army service as a cinematographer for Israel’s elite Maglan commando unit. During this time, he gained crucial documentary skills that helped him develop his personal cinematographic style.
In 2013, alongside his work as a DOP, Matan began working in post-production as a colorist and compositor for commercials. His post-production knowledge and experience helps him take his work to new heights, adding an extra level of creative thought to every frame he shoots.
Matan’s projects are characterized by diligent pre-production work. In-depth conversations with directors and detailed shooting scripts help bring three-dimensional characters to light, and meticulous planning ensures seamless, cost-effective, post production and a calm set.
As a DOP, Matan has developed a signature style of intimate imagery that combines the poetic with the realistic.
In 2018, “The love letter”, a short film he shot, was awarded prizes at the Tribeca and Jerusalem film festivals. The film was also nominated for the Israeli Film Academy Award (Ophir) for Best Short, and sold to HBO.
In 2019, Matan shot the feature film “Abu Omar” (Laila Productions), which was awarded Best Work in Progress at the Haifa Festival, and shortlisted for the 2020 Cannes Film Festival in the L’Acid category for independent film. In 2022 sold to HBO.
